Every October, Wordfest produces The Imaginairium, Canada’s Liveliest Literary Festival. But wait, there’s more. We also present the world’s most intriguing authors (in every genre!) from January through December at our theatre in Memorial Park Library, Central Library, and Calgary’s best venues. We work with local independent booksellers and community partners to bring you illuminating, invigorating, affordable, life-affirming experiences.

We’re thrilled that Alan Doyle is returning to Wordfest with perhaps his most personal book yet, The Smiling Land: All Around the Circle in My Newfoundland and Labrador. The conversation, hosted by the ebullient Nita Prose (the bestselling author of The Maid, who was Doyle’s first book editor in a previous life), includes an audience Q&A and book signing. In We Breed Lions, TSN Senior Correspondent Rick Westhead delivers a hard-hitting and powerful look at hockey’s moment of reckoning in Canada, exploring how a game beloved nationwide has been rocked in recent years by court cases involving sexual assault and startling incidents of hazing and abuse throughout junior hockey.

This timely conversation, hosted by respected Calgary sports journalist Vicki Hall, includes an audience Q&A and book signing, fuelled by Shelf Life Books.

In the year of “Elbows Up,” we can’t think of a more entertaining celebrity to guide us through our Canadian-ness than award-winning comedian and actor Mark Critch.

Critch’s new book, Sorry, Not Sorry: An Unapologetic Look at What Makes Canada Worth Fighting For explores Canada’s national identity with sharp wit, a perceptive eye, and refreshing ability to set things in historical context. Critch’s style of humour is the perfect antidote for these turbulent and confusing times. We can’t wait to welcome him to Calgary for this lively conversation hosted by Ali Bryan, followed by a book signing fuelled by Owl’s Nest Books, who will be onsite with copies of the new book, along with Critch’s previous bestsellers.

Kanata Classics is a ground-breaking collection of timeless books, curated to lead the conversation on our country’s culture, history, and identity. Wordfest is thrilled to bring together four of the writers who’ve contributed to this amazing initiative: Jordan Abel and David Chariandy (NISHGA) and Kim Thúy and Sharon Bala (Ru). The conversation, hosted by Shelley Youngblut, includes an audience Q&A and book signing.
